Who Are We?

“Homelessness does not define an individual.  It’s how we as individuals respond to the homeless that defines a community.” -Alyce H.

Eradicating Homelessness from the Ground Up!

Mission.

We’re a non-profit organization based in Detroit with ‘roots’ in Santa Barbara. Our mission is to get homeless and low-income families into safe affordable housing, eliminate food insecurity, and grow healthy thriving neighborhoods.

Our Philosophy.

We believe no one should be without a secure home and no community without accessibility to fresh wholesome foods or the capabilities to produce their own.

We’re simultaneously addressing the issues of homelessness and hunger without creating dependency, but self-sufficiency, through our community gardens, Backyard Farming and Urban Homesteading Programs for homeless and low-income men, women and children.

How We’re Going About it.

  • Rehabilitating homes in underserved communities
  • Transitional Housing
  • Starting community gardens and backyard farms
  • Urban Homesteading Program
  • Donating gardens to homeless shelters and community kitchens
  • Client choice food pantries
  • Mobile markets
  • Social Awareness Campaigns
  • Educational programming

What Makes Us Unique?

The organization was started in 2006 when our founder was homeless and living in a California motel with her kids.  We’ve been there… and we’ve overcome it.

Seeds of Compassion…

Hopefully, we’ll inspire you to lend a hand up to someone in need.  There’s so much to be done.  But, all it takes is one person willing to give of their time and an entire community can change for the better.  Won’t you join us in sowing seeds of compassion?
